PLAY FOR PATRICK
With heavy hearts, the Brainerd Amateur Hockey Association board and families extend our deepest sympathy. Words cannot even begin to express our sorrow.
On Friday, November 14th we lost a member of our Minnesota Hockey family, Patrick Schoonover. Patrick was a member of the Eastview Bantam AA team participating in the Battle for the Blue Ox hockey tournament in Brainerd.
The Schoonover family, Eastview Bantam AA players, coaches and families and the Eastview community are in our thoughts and prayers. Our hearts go out to all of you during this difficult time.
As a hockey community know that we are remembering Patrick’s family, friends and teammates and honoring the memory of Patrick. Patrick will remain in our hearts forever.

Community invited to Grand Opening Celebration at the newly renovated Essentia Health Sports Center
Saturday, December 20
The community is invited to a Grand Opening Celebration at the newly renovated Essentia Health Sports Center in Brainerd on Saturday, December 20.
All are welcome to join together to cheer on both the Brainerd High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys and Girls hockey teams as they take on Bemidji, tour the new facility and receive a free giveaway from 1-5p.m.
The Brainerd Amateur Hockey Foundation began the transformation of this community landmark, formerly the Brainerd Area Civic Center, into a new multi-purpose events and sports center in June 2014. Renovations focused on impacting the experience at the Essentia Health Sports Center for the spectators and participants especially those who are handicapped. Improvements included ADA-accessibility in such areas as restrooms, locker rooms and concessions. The addition of an elevator provides access the warmth and amenities on the expanded second level viewing areas for both sheets of ice; as well as other key upgrades to welcome community members and visitors.
“We are excited to complete this renovation,” said Eric Fischer, President of BAHF. “These improvements will not only benefit hockey players and spectators but also many other organizations that use this facility including local camps, figure skating clubs, ISD 181, and community organizations including the Brainerd Lakes Chamber and Mid-Minnesota Builders Association.”
As a year round facility and a regional destination that represents healthy activities, the Brainerd Amateur Hockey Foundation was excited to partner with many community organizations and volunteers to upgrade this space.
Naming sponsor Essentia Health, CEO of St. Joseph’s Medical Center & Clinics, Adam Rees said “We view collaboration with the Brainerd Amateur Hockey Foundation and improvements to this facility as a natural fit given our interest in seeing the health improve for all in the Brainerd Lakes Area. We are focused on healthy choices, healthy activities and serving all in our community.”
Local community partners, in addition to Essentia Health, who made the project a reality include Widseth Smith Nolting; Nor-Son, Inc.; and Bremer Bank. “In additional to the thousands of volunteer hours, as we needed to keep the building operating and ice in use over the past six months,” said Fischer.
The Brainerd Amateur Hockey Foundation (BAHF) invites the community to join them at the Essentia Health Sports Center on Saturday, December 20, located at 502 Jackson Street, Brainerd. Game times for the Brainerd High School teams are as follows: 1-3p.m. Varsity Girls and Junior Varsity Boys take on Bemidji then from 3-5p.m. Varsity Boys and Junior Varsity Girls faceoff against Bemidji. Brainerd area residents can attend the games free of charge and all attendees will receive a free giveaway and are invited to tour the facility.
The Brainerd Amateur Hockey Foundation is a 501c3 tax exempt organization. Additional community partners and individual founders who are interested in expanding the impact of this facility can contact the Board.

The purpose of Brainerd Amateur Hockey Association (BAHA) and the essence of its existence is that participation in an organized hockey program is healthy, educational, and fun. The hockey association, its teams and adult members, therefore, will strive to provide fun for players, improve hockey skills and develop responsibility and self-discipline. The goal of BAHA will always be to create an atmosphere of sportsmanship, self-confidence, and self-pride in hopes of preparing the players not only for the game of hockey, but also to become well-rounded and contributing members of their community.
